Eriq is an Oglala Lakota scholar and star athlete from the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. Through his education at Black Hills State University he aims to improve the economy of his reservation and for all of Indian Country. His community leadership, dedication to his studies, and strong performance as a football player are admirable. Mr. Swiftwater’s endeavors to keep Lakota traditions thriving by assisting and participating in ceremonies are important. Eriq’s perseverance despite hardship and strong example of his Native heritage is why he is being recognized as an exceptional Native youth.
